CONTESTS
Play Gentle Giant’s live version of “Free Hand”
The is the Holy Grail of bass that I never attained. If you duplicate—and I mean exactly—the bass line of the live version of Gentle Giant’s “Free Hand,” I’ll send you a copy of Ghosts and Ballyhoo and a copy of In Cold Sweat, both signed by Scott Thunes and me.
You’ll have to track down your own video or recording of the song, because YouTube links change. The CD Playing the Fool: The Official Live Album and the DVD GG at the GG: Gentle Giant Sight & Sound in Concert have excellent recordings of “Free Hand.” You can choose either version. The CD will be harder because it has a truly spectacular fill near the end that I would’ve given all my teeth to be able to play. You’ll know it when you hear it.
There will be only three winners. Post a video of yourself playing the song on YouTube, fill out the form, include the URL of the video, and if I think you did a really excellent job, I’ll send you the books. The winners will have their videos posted on my site. Warning: I’ll be merciless in judging you, because you’re taking on my idol, Ray Shulman. He deserves only the best.
This line will have a link to the winners’ videos.
All decisions by me—the mastermind behind these contests—are final, arbitrary, and based entirely on my subjective opinion. Unless you bribe me. I’d say $50,000 would ensure a first-place win. However, if your victory is bought instead of earned, I’ll have to make that clear when I post your winning entry. I can’t have people thinking that I have no taste. If I choose crap as the winner, everybody has to understand that it was because I was paid to do so. Other than that, there are no terms or conditions. And you can enter as many times as you want.
